7 ways to boost your mental health

It’s important to not just look after your physical health but your mental health too. Our team of doctors have come up with 7 practical ways in which you can look after your mental health. Making some simple changes to your everyday life will make a huge difference.

7 ways to boost your mental health

1. Talk to someone about how you feel

If you feel down, or you feel upset or worried about something, sharing how you feel with someone you trust can make a big difference. You may be surprised how much people will listen and give you support when you tell them you have been going through a tough time. If you feel unable to talk to someone close to you, you could also talk to a doctor or a counsellor.

2. Take regular exercise

Research shows that exercise improves mood and reduces stress. It can also help you sleep better, and is good for your physical health too. Start slowly, and aim to build up to 20 to 30 minutes of exercise each day.

3. Eat healthily

Eating a healthy, balanced diet can support both your physical and mental health. Eating regular meals can also give you more energy during the day.

4. Get enough sleep

Lack of sleep over a period of time can lead to tiredness, poor concentration and lower mood. Everyone has different sleep requirements, but most people need 7 to 8 hours sleep each night.

5. Do things with others

Social contact, and regularly spending time with others, can have a positive impact on your mental health and can enrich your life. This could be as simple as spending time with friends or family, or could involve taking up new activities or hobbies. Getting involved in your local community, such as by volunteering, is also an excellent way to meet new people and to improve your mood.

6. Take time to relax

Finding time to relax each day, by doing something you enjoy, can help you recover from the stresses of everyday life. Choose activities which help you unwind, such as reading, going for a walk, listening to music, or watching TV.

7. Drink less alcohol

Some people use alcohol to cope with stress, low mood or anxiety. However, alcohol is a depressant, and drinking too much can worsen depression and anxiety. Drinking too much can also lead to physical health and social problems
