Also known as pinkeye, conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva – the clear tissue that lies over the white part of your eye. Children get it a lot as it spreads very rapidly in schools and community childcare settings. It rarely causes damage to vision, especially if you catch it early and treat it. It is caused by viruses, bacteria or an allergic reaction. It sometimes results from a sexually transmitted disease so always contact your doctor if you recognise some of the symptoms of conjunctivitis; teary eyes, redness in the white of the eye, itchy eyes, green or white discharge that crusts over the eyelashes. Your doctor will prescribe the right treatment after investigating the causes.
