Dermatitis is the word that is used to describe skin conditions resulting in inflammation. It usually presents as an itchy rash on swollen or red skin. There can be many different types and causes include allergies, genetic factors and irritants. The most common form is atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema. This usually presents as dry and flaky skin. Contact dermatitis is usually as a result with contact from an allergen like cleaning products or the nickel in certain type of jewellery. Seborrheic dermatitis is less common and is thought to be caused by a yeast in the oil secretion in the skin. Scratching the area associated with the dermatitis risks creating open sores which may become infected.
