Tonsillitis is a very common condition, especially in children. It is when the two masses of tissue at the back of your throat, called tonsils, get infected. The function of the tonsils is to trap germs that otherwise enter your airways and cause infection. The symptoms of tonsillitis include inflammation and swelling of the tonsils, throat pain, difficulty swallowing, swollen glands in the neck area and sometimes a white coating on the tonsils themselves. Usually the doctor will be able to diagnose this based on the description of the physical findings and may diagnose a bacterial infection. In this case, your videoDoc doctor may prescribe antibiotics and request a follow up appointment to monitor the infection.
